MTA - Do you know the differences?

About

General Statement

MTA Dental is a free educational platform for dental students, practitioners and scientists. The aim of this platform is to give you the current status and understanding of Portland cement-like endodontic and restorative materials commonly referred to by the trade designation “MTA” (“Mineral Trioxide Aggregate”), and to present an outline of the most important parameters. Darvell and Wu* proposed to use the generic name for this class of materials, Hydraulic Silicate Cement (HSC), and based on that a detailed information scheme has been established containing the most vital information for every material. Today, nearly a hundred different brands based on HSC materials have been brought to the dental market. And the number is still rising.

For practitioners it is difficult to see the advantages and disadvantages of every brand. For the scientist it is sometimes a Sisyphean task to identify the ingredients and purposes of these different materials.

All these HSC materials have different distinct advantages, including sealing, sterilizing, mineralizing, dentinogenic and osteogenic capacities, which research continues to demonstrate. A new classification system of all HSC allows us to differentiate very easily the basic structure of every material. With this webpage we will give every interested expert a quick access to all of the most important parameters of almost all the HSC on the market.

To keep our data base updated, we appreciate feedback, input regarding new materials and any further information. Collecting data files will help us expand our knowledge and correct mistakes. Therefore we are grateful for any advice and greatly appreciate every notification of errors and inadequacies.
